Trip to Lake Placid, NY

I don’t really like traveling while on a calorie restriction and deep into my competition prep…but I’ll make an exception for my family.😉

Since my niece was born in August, I have been trying to make trips to Lake Placid, NY to see my family at least once a month. After the holidays it become a bit tough due to prep, work, and my brothers work/travel schedule. My brother and his wife work for a ski education program in Lake Placid, my brother being the head coach for the Nordic ski program becomes pretty busy with coaching and traveling throughout the winter months.

This past weekend was the 1st weekend that we could both make work, so I packed my bag, my meals for the trip and entire weekend, and a few other essentials, and made the 4 1/2 hour trek to NY. The drive from NH through VT and up into NY is probably one of my favorite drives ever. It is absolutely gorgeous! I throw on some music or a podcast and the hours fly by.

This wasn’t the first time for me traveling while on a diet. In September when I went to visit Shane & Danielle, I was on a restriction as well although not quite as rigid. But I made it work and they are both very understanding and respectful of my goals.

If you read my last Prep Update, you know that I have been carb cycling – 2 days low, 1 day high cycle. When I was looking at the calendar I was going to have a high day on Friday while sitting in a car for a good chunk of the day and low day Saturday. I decided it would be best to switch those days so I could enjoy a high day if my family wanted to go out to eat at any point. Which we did, we went out for dinner Saturday night, they enjoyed some flatbread pizzas and I had a jerk chicken salad that fit nicely into my remaining macros for the day.

For this past week and over the weekend my meals were:
Meal 1: 130g egg whites, 1 egg (2 on LCD), 1tbsp reduced fat cheese, 1/4c spinach, 1 1/2 slices of Ezekiel bread, 1tbsp SF jelly (HCD), 30ml SF Sinister Labs pancake syrup
Meal 2: 3oz 93% lean ground turkey OR 96% lean ground beef with 83g of green beans (SteamFresh steak seasoned), Tumaro’s LC tomato basil wrap (HCD)
(I had left over turkey thinking it would cover the 7 days of the week…it didn’t so added beef in for the other days)
Meal 3: 3oz chicken, 60g California mixed veggies (I’m on a frozen veggie kick), 15ml (1tbsp) Primal Kitchen’s Green Goddess dressing (LCD), 100g Basmati rice (HCD)
Meal 4: 3oz ground chicken, 85g cauliflower, 50g Brussels sprouts, 15ml PK Green Goddess dressing (LCD), 65g farro (HCD)
Meal 5: 2oz lettuce, 4oz chicken, 10g dried cranberries, 30ml Anne’s Balsamic Vinaigrette
Post-Workout: 30g whey protein powder, 1 apple + 10g PbFit/PB2 OR 2 plain rice cakes, 1tbsp SF jelly

HCD = only consumed on a high carb day; LCD = only consumed on a low carb day
weight of proteins (except eggs) and grains are cooked weights

Friday meals were good to go. I brought along stuff for breakfast to make both Saturday and Sunday, and all other meals were prepped prior. I’m sure bringing everything pre-prepared and unprepared sounds like a lot of unnecessary things, but I have goals and I’m not letting anything get in my way of my progress this season. I’ve come 14 weeks so far, and have 6 more to go. So, why screw up now?

Saturday I trained like I usually do. I trained back/rear delts/arms. Lake Placid recently opened a Health and Fitness center, so I decided to check that out. Along with my usual training, I went for a walk on the trails with Valla and the rest of the family.

Coming back Sunday, I was feeling really low energy and “weak” so I allowed myself to take in a little bit more than I usually would on a low carb day. If there’s anything that I’ve learned over the last 2 years of dieting/training, listening to your body is the best thing that you could do for yourself. Having 1 extra day of a little more isn’t going to ruin everything…as long as you’re smart about it.

Today (March 6), I am 18 days out from my 1st show of the season and 38 days from the 2nd. I’m really excited but am so ready to be done and have a giant burger and a donut or 2…Also being 18 days out, I need to kick my ass into gear and finish my suit. I have the bottoms and half of the top done, then I need to jewel it all. Weekend Goal: Finish sewing the suit. Begin jeweling process. Updates coming soon!
