Who Are You Serving?

Yourself? Others? Society?

Really think about that…
Do you feel obligated to do things that you don't want to do or find no enjoyment in?
Are you constantly overwhelmed and resentful towards what you're putting your time and energy into?
If you answered YES, you aren't serving yourself.

2 weeks ago, I met with Angela – she is a woman of many talents, but I see her specifically for energy healing. I’ve been seeing her since June after my massage therapist mentioned her, and I was curious so I gave it a shot. Angela has opened my eyes to many variables in my life that I had chosen to ignore or that I wasn’t aware of.

When I last saw Angela, I didn't really go into our session with an intention. I wasn't sure where my mind was at because it felt like it was being pulled in 5 different directions. I mentioned that I had been busy with traveling in recent weeks and had another trip coming up that weekend. I was feeling overwhelmed by the schedule that I had created for myself and felt that I didn't have a solid foot on the ground to keep me in control...so she asked me:

Are you doing this for yourself or for them?

I wasn't sure how to respond, I had never thought about it in that way. So when I did respond, I told her that I wanted to visit my friends and see new places...she countered with the fact that I can visit and explore new places without having to visit friends. This fact applies to everything. I can do something without it having to be attached to another person or purpose. I can do something solely for my own happiness and goals.

I believe that we are brought up with it ingrained in our minds that we need to serve others, to do what society wants us to do, to seek approval from outside sources. But the truth is, we should only be seeking that approval from ourselves.

Ask yourself:
Will this make me happy?
Who am I doing this for?
Will it lead me to where I want to go?

Have the courage and be honest with yourself and others about what you want. Say 'no' to anything and anyone that prevents you from being yourself and that doesn't align with your goals and values.

Don't get me wrong...there will definitely be times that you'll be investing your time and energy into others, but acknowledge that it's for them and that you are choosing to participate. Understand that they may not appreciate what you're doing for them, but appreciate yourself for the actions that you take.

Don't do something just for the image/reputation that it will create about yourself for others. Do what you want because that will bring you happiness and satisfaction which will bring about a positive image of you for yourself and others.

What I do for myself:
  • Make my bed every morning...this kicks off my day in an organized fashion
  • Scheduling my training into my day, showing up and committing to my gym session...it's my sanity, thank you very much
  • Build a routine that is consistent even when shit hits the fan
  • Invest my time in my goals and taking the steps to achieve them
What I'm letting go of:
  • Comparing...myself to those around me. I should only be comparing myself to myself and the expectations that I set.
  • Toxic people...sorry, not sorry. I'm not going to waste my time or precious energy on your drama and BS
  • Expectations of others.
